The Plastic Peoples of the Universe

Plastic People's of the Universe

This photo is from 1974, two years before the band members were arrested and made an example of.

The Plastic Peoples of the Universe were a Prague Spring-inspired band during the 1970s. They sang underground in an unconventional rock sound, and were eventually arrested in 1976.

Havel worked closely with the band, and they became his inspiration for Charter 77. When he and Jiri Nemec saw these young band members arrested, they began to understand the power of activism. This group inspired further activism that led to Charter 77.
